Direct Services - 01/07/97

V25-430 : MARKETING STYLE

Members were reminded that for some years Waveney Contract Services had used a simple marketing style or logo on vehicles, brochures and in advertisements. Although legislation limited the services which could be marketed, it was felt there was scope in the areas of Leisure, Trade Waste, MOTs and Drainage for Waveney Contract Services, as the direct provider of many Council services, to let the residents of Waveney know who they were and what they did.

It was felt that Waveney Contract Services had not maximised the available marketing opportunities, due in part to the low profile nature of the existing logo. It was proposed that a more eye catching and informative logo be developed to form the basis for marketing within any section of Waveney Contract Services. Such a logo would build on the existing Council image and not replace it. The designs would also be particularly suitable for display on vehicles, something greatly underused at present.

The Director of Waveney Contract Services circulated to members 'first shot' drawings of such a scheme. The graphic designer had used a lighthouse as the basis of the logo in his work, which was felt to be inappropriate. Members were asked to contact the Department if they had an alternative suggestion.

The Chief Executive reminded of the need for a consistent corporate approach, citing the Suffolk County Council manual which laid down details for everything from compliment slips to hoardings and had proved a great success.

RESOLVED

That the Director of Waveney of Waveney Contract Services pursue investigations on the Marketing logo issue, and a detailed report with costings and designs be brought to a future meeting of the Committee.
