V25-35 : ALFRED CORRY LIFEBOAT MUSEUM, SOUTHWOLD HARBOUR
The applicants for the above project had requested that consideration be given to an alternative building to house the proposed Maritime Museum on the Southwold Harbour car park. Members were reminded that the permission granted last year was for a new building with steeply pitched roof, to be clad in black weatherboarding and roof sheeting. The alternative building was the former Cromer lifeboat station currently being offered for sale and stored in Lowestoft. It was a distinctive structure dating from 1939, and was similar in size to the building already approved. The applicants argued that the old lifeboat station would be eminently suitable for the Museum, "being of historic value both from its architecture and in connection with the assistance in saving many lives at sea". RESOLVED
That planning permission W16522/1 be extended to cover the erection of the alternative building, in the event that it is purchased by the Southwold Maritime Museum Trust.
