COUNCILLOR IAIN WALPOLE - FAILURE TO ATTEND MEETINGS

The Chief Executive reported that Councillor Iain Walpole had failed to attend meetings of the Council since 18 December 1996. This meant that if the Council did not approve an extension of the period of time for attendance he would cease to be a member of the Council by virtue of Section 85 of the Local Government Act 1972. Owing to a procedural matter the Chief Executive asked for delegated power to declare the vacancy following this meeting. It was anticipated that following the advertising of the vacancy and the prompt receipt of a claim for an election a by- election could be held on Thursday 31 July 1997.

RESOLVED

1. That the report of the Chief Executive on the attendance of Councillor Iain Walpole be noted.

2. That the Chief Executive be given delegated authority to declare Councillor Walpole's office vacant under Section 86 of the Local Government Act 1972.
