Application for construction of 20 sheltered housing units.

A previous scheme for 24 sheltered housing units had been considered by members at the December 1996 meeting but was deferred due to concerns regarding the mass of the proposed building, its design, overlooking and highway objections.

The building had now been reduced to three storeys high adjacent to Coastguard Cottages with a four storey block towards the front of the site. The design had now been amended to reflect the architectural details of the existing building, which was to be demolished, and Coastguard Cottages.

The recommendation of the Director of Planning and Building Control was for approval, subject to discussions with highway engineers. The highway authority was now satisfied with the proposal subject to only sheltered housing being provided to people in an age range to meet parking needs. Members felt the proposed name of Nelson Towers could cause confusion with nearby Nelson Court; officers would consult with the applicants.

There had been one objection to the amended scheme from a neighbour in the middle of the Coastguard Cottages terrace.

RESOLVED

That planning permission be granted to application W16734/1.
