V25-2 : ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN

Councillor S. Bostock proposed the nomination of Councillor I. Turrell, which was duly seconded.

On being put, it was

RESOLVED

That Councillor I. Turrell be elected Chairman of Waveney District Council to hold office until the Annual Meeting in 1998.

Councillor I. Turrell made a Declaration of Acceptance of Chairman.

Councillor Turrell expressed her gratitude of Councillor Bostock in nominating her for the position of Chairman of the Council. She thanked the members of the Council for their support and was pleased that her family were able to be with her on this special occasion. She likened the event to the well known saying "all the world is a stage" and felt that her position as Vice-Chairman stood her in good stead as an understudy to Councillor Carter's achievements as Chairman. Councillor Turrell then paid tribute to Councillor Carter's year as Chairman particularly his support for individuals and the community as a whole which was further enhanced by the enthusiastic support from Councillor Rita Carter during the year. She felt they both deserved an "oscar" not for their acting but for their dedication.

Councillor Turrell then went on to congratulate all those Councillors who had been successful in being elected County Councillors last Thursday and welcomed Councillor Blowers to his first meeting following his By-Election success, and had a special welcome for Joan Reynolds. She paid special tribute to the Chief Executive and his staff for the efficient organisation of the General Election and Local Election and paid tribute to the political parties for the good nature of the campaign.

In turning to the year ahead she felt that the priorities for the Council, although a little less glamorous to the issues facing the nation, declared that the business in hand would be centred around regeneration pointing specifically to Bungay, the Yacht Station, the High Street in Lowestoft and the enormous commitment required for the SRB improvement schemes going ahead in Kirkley. She emphasised that Councillors responsibilities were not only confined to the Council Chamber and it was important for Councillors to recognise that they had some valuable work to do within the communities of not only Lowestoft but Beccles, Bungay, Halesworth and Southwold. She looked forward to a busy year and thanked Councillors for the trust they had put in her and the privilege she felt in serving the Council as its Chairman.
