V25-169 : LOWESTOFT SEAFRONT AIR SHOW

A bid for various RAF aircraft to take part in a Lowestoft Seafront Air Show was made last October. It was felt that the show would need a major attraction, like the Red Arrows, if it was to make an impact on the local events calendar. Notification of the Red Arrows and the availability of other RAF aircraft was received in February and it was only then that the air show became a reality, with the date confirmed as Thursday, 24 July 1997.

At Lowestoft, the show would also feature other display aircraft with almost continuous interest from 10.30am-4.30pm and there would be ground activities at Royal Green and along the seafront for an event which should reasonably attract attendance of 50,000 plus.

The main expense was, of course, the air displays but support both in goods or services and in cash were being sought from both local and national businesses. There were many diverse aspects to be considered in planning such an event, including a temporary air traffic control point, commentary relay along the seafront, crowd control, policing and car parking. However, with a day visitor spend at £9, as estimated by the East Anglian Tourist Board 1994, the value of an air show could amount to almost £500,000.

The cost of the event was estimated to be £28,000 and income generated should account for half that figure, leaving a net operating cost of just over £14,000 to be raised through sponsorship.

RESOLVED

That approval be given to organising the Lowestoft Seafront Air Show on Thursday, 24 July 1997 and that the net cost of £14,000 be guaranteed, subject to sponsorship and additional income opportunities being explored.

*No Budget Provision.
