V25-168 : CHARGE EVENTS AT SPARROW'S NEST GARDENS
The Director of Community Services reported that an entrance charge had been made for four events at Sparrow s Nest Gardens in 1996, and four similar events were planned for 1997. The East Point Musical Explosion! would be held on 11/12 July 1997. To cover the costs of staging the event an entrance charge of £5.00, £1.00 for children would be made, although advance tickets would be £4.50. This event had become a regular summer feature but the costs had risen due to a need to raise standards in both presentation and safety issues. Specific sound limits would also be set this year by Environmental Health Officers and strictly adhered to in a further effort to alleviate nuisance to nearby residents. The Country Music Show, presented by Lowestoft Carnival Committee, would be held on 13 July 1997, and shared some costs with the music weekend. The proposed entrance charge was £3.50, £1.00 for children. The first show of this type presented by the Carnival Committee proved very popular, and by staging a second similar event it was hoped once again to give good entertainment and to raise funds for Lowestoft Hospital. Armada Special would be held on 19 July 1997 and would feature the usual amusements and craft stalls together with bands and dancers, displays and children s entertainers, and lighting the beacon and fireworks. An entrance charge of £1.00, 50p for children, was proposed from 12 Noon. Lowestoft Carnival week would once again open at Sparrow's Nest Gardens with Carnival Funday, with a variety of family entertainment and mini fair. It was intended that a fireworks finale would also be staged this year. It was proposed that an all-day entrance charge of £2.00, £1.00 for children, be permitted to enable a better financial return than last year, both to fully cover the costs and to meet the charitable purpose of the carnival organisation. RESOLVED
That the entrance charges for the 1997 East Point Musical Explosion!, Carnival Country Music Show, Armada Special and Carnival Funday at Sparrow's Nest Gardens, be approved. (Councillor T. Carter declared an interest in the above item, and left the room during the debate).
