V25-1564 : BALL GAME PROBLEMS

The report of the Director of Community Services reviewed the "No Ball Games" signs policy adopted at minute V17-644/13, following further complaints from residents concerned with noise and nuisance. As an alternative to erecting signs three other options had been tried, which had worked with varying success:

(i) allowing grass to grow long adjacent to properties where problems are occurring; (ii) shrub/tree planting schemes to reduce the playing areas;
(iii) low post and rail fencing to reduce the scope of the ball playing area.

A considerable amount of staff time was taken up with these problems and it was proposed that ward Councillors could assist officers in monitoring the problems on open spaces, before any formal decisions were made.

RESOLVED

1. That members be invited to assist with the monitoring of ball game problems at sites within their ward.

2. That the "No Ball Games" signs policy adopted at minute V17-644/3 be confirmed, subject to provision being made for the use of other management techniques on open spaces to avoid the banning of ball games if possible.
