The Committee considered the report of the Director of Community Services which outlined threats on the Council's tree resource and issues concerning the management practices employed to address them. The Planning and Transportation Committee also considered this issue at its meeting on 13 May 1997 and approved the recommendation. RESOLVED
That the following actions to manage the Council's tree resource be approved: (1) Trees planted up to five years ago receive increased watering, and this watering be three times a week as appropriate. (2) Spending on tree planting be restricted to fund the increased watering programme. (3) A tree telephone hotline be established.
(4) Ways of increasing community interest, such as a tree warden scheme be investigated. (5) Officers continue discussions with Bell Cablemedia on proper protection for trees when they excavate the public highway. (6) The Officers press Suffolk County Council to reinstate spending on the maintenance of highway trees to 1995/96 levels. *Affects the services of more than one Committee.
