V25-1545 : EAST-WEST RAIL CONSORTIUM

The report of the Director of Community Services was considered as a matter of urgency, under the statutory provision accorded to the Chairman, as a decision was required as to whether the Council was to join the above Consortium.

The East-West Rail Consortium had been established over three years ago to examine the feasibility of establishing a strategic east-west railway linking Ipswich/Norwich with Oxford/Swindon.

Through the Norfolk and Suffolk Rail Policy Groups, comment had been made that the existing rail lines together with the ports of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft had not been detailed on the publicity material. It had been agreed that this was a serious omission. Further, it had been concluded that both ports could gain substantial benefits from the successful delivery of the project and thus Waveney had been invited to join the Consortium.

An annual financial contribution of £2,500 over the next few years was being requested to enable the Council to take an active role in the project.

RESOLVED

That a contribution of £2,500 per annum be made for the next three years to the East-West Rail Consortium.

*No Budget Provision and
Commitment of Forward Budget
