V25-1365 : FOOD AND SAFETY SECTION - DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AUDIT
The report of the Director of Housing and Environmental Services informed members that the Government was considering the setting up of a National Food Safety Agency. The Department of Health was working on an Audit system which the Agency would eventually use when examining the work of Local Authorities. As part of the programme, officials spent two days auditing the work of the Council's Food and Safety Team, against the Codes of Practice laid down by the Food Safety Act. They considered the levels of inspection being carried out, along with the food hygiene training service provided, "most impressive" and commented positively on the beneficial effects of the ISO 9002 Quality Assurance System which had been in place for two and half years. The audit system, when fully developed, would help to ensure that activities such as Food Safety enforcement were kept on a local level, and it was anticipated that Waveney would be asked to help further in development. RESOLVED
1. That the Food and Safety Team be congratulated on the standards which have been achieved. 2 That support be given to any further requests by the Department of Health for assistance in developing a Food Authority Audit Scheme.
