V25-1292 : FOOTWAY AND AMENITY LIGHTING
The report of the Director of Community Services considered the decision of the Housing and Environmental Services Committee made at V25-1119 to lobby the appropriate bodies regarding the use and design of street/highway lighting in support of the Campaign for Dark Skies to reduce light pollution. The Council was in its own right a lighting authority, responsible for footway lighting, with over 2,000 units installed. In addition there were lights on the seafront and yacht stations, together with Christmas decorations and tree lights. New designs were available for street and footway lighting which minimised light pollution. The costs varied dependant on the level of work required and the level of commitment to reduce pollution. Given the footway lighting stock, some £400,000 to £800,000 would potentially have to be committed from the capital programme to meet any commitment to the Campaign. RESOLVED
That the commitment to the Campaign for Dark Skies be considered in the context of the potential financial impact and reports be presented to the appropriate committees.
