V25-1139 : LOCAL GOVERNMENT PENSION SCHEME - 1997 REGULATIONS
The Sub-Committee considered the report of the Director of Central Services which informed members of the changes to the Local Government Pension Scheme which would apply from 1 April 1998. The regulations gave some discretionary powers to the employing and administering authorities. Suffolk County Council had asked for views to be expressed by 1 December 1997 on the exercise of its discretions with regard to pension abatement and spouses pensions for life. It had also asked for the decisions by employing authorities over the exercise of their discretions to be made by 31 January 1998. RECOMMENDED
1. That the changes to the Pension Regulations be noted.
2. That the following views be expressed to Suffolk County Council on the exercise of its discretions: (a) that the present policy on the abatement of pensions be continued after 1 April 1998 (b) that from 1 April 1998 spouses pensions for pre - 1 April 1998 leavers be payable for life. 3. That the exercise of this authority's 'employing authority' discretions be deferred to the next meeting of this Sub-Committee.
