V25-1080 : ASSOCIATION OF DRAINAGE AUTHORITIES CONFERENCE

The Chairman of this Committee, accompanied by the Principal Engineer, Drainage and Coast Protection attended the 1997 Annual Conference of the Association of Drainage Authorities (ADA) on 5 November 1997.

In addition to the annual reports by the various committees, informative presentations were made. Of particular interest to this Council were those describing:

(a) the Local Government Association working group reviewing;
(b) the Rate Support Grant eligibility for Land Drainage/Flood Defence expenditure; (c) the control of development to avoid increased for flood risk;
(d) conservation of wildlife habitats and climate change.

An officer from Central Services had attended a meeting on 14 November 1997 about Government proposals to include coast protection in the SSA rather than keeping it separate as now. A consultant for 61 coastal authorities had advised that this was likely to reduce their existing coast protection budgets.

Members were unhappy about the proposal and instructed the Director of Central Services to write to the Local Government Association supporting the consultant's case..

RESOLVED

That a letter be sent to the Local Government Association urging them to argue with Government to keep the existing financial arrangements for coast protection.
