V25-1078 : OULTON BROAD YACHT STATION - FIXED JETTY

The Director of Community Services reported that the present fixed jetty to the Oulton Broad Yacht Station was extensively used throughout the summer months as an anchorage point for visiting pleasure craft. It was constructed of timber cross pieces and piles with a boarded timber surface.

In 1988 the Timber Research and Development Association was commissioned to inspect and report on the general condition of the fixed jetty. As a result of their comments minor remedial works were undertaken. In Spring 1995 a specialist diving company was engaged to examine the integrity of the complete jetty structure including the pile supports. The subsequent report, complete with photographs, clearly stated the need for significant works. As a result of that report an item had been included in the forward capital programme for the total replacement of the jetty.

The process of weathering and general decay has continued to such an extent that two incidents had occurred with people putting their feet through rotten boards. Following the latest incident and a further inspection the jetty had been closed to the public.

A sum of £5k had been included in 1997/98 special items to be used to carry out sufficient works to make the jetty safe for use during the summer of 1998, although the actual extent of the work could not be identified until the boarding had been removed. If the works were of a more significant nature only the first part of the jetty would be re-opened. A comprehensive report would be brought to this Committee once a feasibility study had identified the full extent of the works.

In the medium term it would be necessary to completely replace the jetty throughout its entire length to maintain the same number of moorings at the Yacht Station. Budget prices obtained to- date indicated that a figure of £55k should be set aside in the Capital Programme 1998/99.

RESOLVED

That replacement of the fixed jetty at Oulton Broad Yacht Station be considered in the context of the Other Services Capital Programme for 1998/99.
