V25-1074 : OPENING HOURS OF THE QUAY TOILETS, BECCLES

At the 28 August 1997 meeting of this Committee, members requested that the extension of the opening hours of the Quay toilets at Beccles be investigated and reported back to a future meeting.

The Quay toilets were available for use April to October 8.30am to 6.30pm and November to March 8.30am to 9.30am Monday to Friday and 7.30am to 11.30am Saturday and Sunday. Extending the opening hours could be on the basis of either full supervision, unsupervised with a member of staff returning to lock the toilets at the designated closing time, or unsupervised with the toilets left permanently unlocked.

The Quay area attracted groups of youths after dark and the risk of vandalism would sharply increase should the toilets be unsupervised. Increasing the opening hours with permanent staffing would cost in the region of £6.00 per hour. Reducing the additional opening hours would decrease costs pro-rata. Given that few difficulties had been experienced with the present arrangements the Director of Community Services recommended that the existing policy continued.

Members were of the opinion that, as the toilets were in an area frequented by tourists, walkers and the boating fraternity it was important that they be open up to 9 pm during June, July and August. However, as exact costings were not available and it was not known whether the costs would be within budget, the Committee wished the item to be deferred to the next meeting.

RESOLVED

That the report of the Director of Community Services on the opening hours of the Quay Toilets, Beccles, be deferred to the next meeting of the Committee.
