V25-1022 : FLIXTON PARK QUARRY - EXTENSION OF SAND AND GRAVEL WORKINGS

The Director of Planning and Building Control reported that the Council had been consulted on the above application by Suffolk County Council, as the Minerals Planning Authority.

The proposal was to extend the gravel workings, over a twenty year period, southwards and eastwards from the existing quarry, thereby bringing them closer to Flixton village. The area was also a designated Special Landscape Area.

Flixton Parish Council had lodged a strong objection to the application on the grounds of loss of residential amenity through noise, dust and traffic, effects on local wildlife, history and heritage, and upon the water table.

The Council had recently presented objections to the Suffolk Minerals Local Plan Inquiry, arguing that demand forecasts were unduly high, insufficient regard had been given to the principles of sustainability, and a better balance should be struck between the needs for the development and the environmental consequences.

The outcome of the Inquiry would not be known until Spring 1988 and the application would not be determined in advance of the Inspector's decision.

RESOLVED

1. That the Minerals Planning Authority be informed of the Council's concern that a convincing case for the extensions to Flixton Park Quarry has not at this stage been made.

2. That the Minerals Planning Authority be requested to reconsult the Council for its further views once the report of the Local Plan Inquiry Inspector is known and the Authority has determined its response.
